Welcome to the Web Site of the Workers’ Educational Association in Northern Ireland (WEA)

We hope that you will find what you are looking for whether you’re a student, a tutor or an agency who wants to know more about what we do. Below is some brief information on the background to the WEA, what we do and how we are organised.

In 1910 the WEA held its first classes in Belfast. Since then the commitment of many people has created an organisation that today assists communities to organise education that responds to their particular needs. To enable this the organisation employs a team of staff that has a broad spectrum of skills in areas such as computer-based learning, arts, women’s development, essential skills, workplace learning and building communities.

The WEA is a voluntary organisation that is governed by an elected management committee. At a local level its activities are directed by its branches.

The WEA organises adult learning, mostly in community settings, with around 6000 people participating in programmes each year. Most programmes are taught through our pool of part-time tutors.

In addition we produce resource materials and hold conferences, seminars, and workshops that assist communities in working together for a better society.
