“Workforce Training Organisation” and the Worker Educational Association Community Relation/ Development Officer Maura Kavanagh planned and delivered a series of Diversity Workshops to coincide and highlight Community Relations week.

Almost sixty N.V.Q. Level 2 and Level 3 adult learners participated in the workshops, which were participative, interactive. They gave everyone the opportunity to learn, challenge and be challenged on views and opinions that that have become almost acceptable in a society that very often reflects intolerance to specific groups within the community of Northern Ireland.

Running along side the learning were lively debates and dialogue covering a multitude of perceptions.

The students found the workshops safe and supportive a space where they could discuss what society had conditioned them to believe, open and respectful to those who did not sure their individual beliefs and above all they left with knowledge they did not have before which would inform the positive way in which they would interact to anyone they may come in contact with in their workplace and personal life.

One student remarked:

"If everyone could have this as part of their training and employers included this in the staff training it would go a long way in improving everyone’s knowledge and respect for difference”
