The WEA Strategic Plan entitled ‘Irresistible Learning’ sets out our strategy up to 2013.

The WEA is a values-led organisation and our work is underpinned by the following practices and beliefs:

  • listening to the learner remains core to our business
  • a high quality service is delivered in all aspects of our work
  • respect for difference and diversity
  • working with others enriches our provision
  • risk taking and innovation are essential for the organisation and its learners
  • adult learning is a vehicle for positive change

STRATEGIC AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

1. The WEA will lobby for recognition of the value of adult learning

  • Take a central leadership role in advocacy for adult learning
  • Build new strategic alliances with people, places and partners
  • Re-energise the WEA as an association

2. The WEA will to provide high quality adult learning that is responsive to learner and societal needs

  • Analyse and respond, as appropriate and possible, to societal changes in Northern Ireland e.g. the growing older population and increased cultural diversity
  • Promote a learning culture that balances the skills needs of the economy with learning for social and individual benefit e.g. learning to support the creative industries and learning to address sectarianism and racism
  • Expand the market for our curriculum and services

3. The WEA will ensure that the governance and management of the organisation enable its sustainability 

  • Review our governance and operational procedures to ensure compliance with Charity Commission and all other regulatory agencies
  • Ongoing quality assurance of all our provision and our internal procedures
  • Strive for sustainability and build the organisation’s capacity to enable other strategic aims
  • Ensure we are a learning organisation and invest in our staff

The WEA will produce an Operational Plan for each year detailing how it will advance these aims and objectives and setting performance indicators.

The WEA Management Committee will review progress annually against the Operational Plans and to ensure that the chosen strategic path is followed.
